DLC (Diamond-Like Carbon) coating is one of the best choices for machining aluminum, brass, and other non-ferrous metals due to its unique properties:
Aluminum and brass are "sticky" metals that tend to weld onto cutting tools, causing poor surface finish, increased friction & heat, and premature tool failure. DLC's ultra-smooth, low-friction surface prevents material from sticking, keeping the tool clean and cutting efficiently.
DLC has a coefficient of friction close to Teflon, minimizing heat buildup. This is critical for high-speed machining of aluminum, where excessive heat can soften the workpiece.
Unlike TiN or AlTiN (which contain titanium), DLC does not chemically react with aluminum, preventing diffusion wear. This makes it far better than standard coatings for long-duration cutting in non-ferrous metals.
While not as hard as AlTiN or diamond coatings, DLC's self-lubricating properties reduce abrasive wear in silicon-rich aluminum (e.g., 6061, 7075) and abrasive brass alloys (e.g., free-machining brass with lead).
The smooth cutting action of DLC-coated tools produces near-polished finishes in brass and aluminum, reducing the need for secondary polishing.
